Project Overview
Nestled in the lush tropical hills of Ubud, Bali, the Surya Loka Eco-Resort is a LEED Silver–certified hospitality destination committed to environmental stewardship and authentic guest immersion. Spanning 8 hectares of terraced rice fields, native gardens, and open-air pavilions, the resort required a lighting solution that balanced ecological sensitivity with refined architectural expression. With no existing outdoor lighting infrastructure, the project demanded a fully integrated landscape lighting design system—low-impact, energy-efficient, and visually cohesive across diverse zones including pathways, water features, bamboo structures, and cliffside villas.
Challenge Analysis
The resort’s sustainability mandate imposed strict constraints: zero light trespass into adjacent forest habitats, minimal skyglow, and full compliance with Bali’s emerging dark-sky guidelines. Traditional halogen or high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures were ruled out due to excessive heat output, short lifespans, and poor controllability. Additionally, the humid coastal microclimate—characterized by daily monsoon showers, salt-laden air, and fungal growth—posed severe reliability risks for standard outdoor lighting. Guests also expected seamless nighttime navigation without visual disruption: glare-free illumination for safety, yet subtle enough to preserve starry skies and nocturnal ambiance. The challenge was to deliver an architectural lighting solution that functioned as both infrastructure and artistry—enhancing spatial perception while honoring bioclimatic integrity.
Solution
We delivered a bespoke outdoor LED landscape lighting system comprising over 420 custom-engineered fixtures, all rated IP67 and thermally optimized for tropical operation. Key components included:
-
Subsurface Pathway Lights: Low-profile 3W warm-white (2700K) LEDs embedded flush with reclaimed teak decking—zero glare, uniform 5-lux footcandle distribution.
-
Uplighting Canes: Adjustable 7W directional fixtures with silicone-sealed optics, mounted on rust-resistant stainless steel stakes to highlight mature frangipani and banyan trunks without leaf burn.
-
Water Feature Accent Kits: Submersible RGBW LED modules (IP68) integrated into natural stone fountains and infinity pools, programmable via DALI-2 for dynamic color transitions aligned with sunset/sunrise cycles.
-
Architectural Grazing Strips: Linear 24V DC LED profiles recessed into bamboo-clad villa eaves, providing soft vertical washes that emphasize texture and volume without spill.
All fixtures feature adaptive dimming (0–10V), integrated photocells, and wireless mesh networking—enabling centralized scheduling, real-time monitoring, and seasonal scene recall via the resort’s BMS platform.
Implementation Process
Installation occurred in three coordinated phases over 10 weeks, timed between rainy seasons to ensure optimal curing of concrete embedments and cable trenching. Our team collaborated closely with the resort’s landscape architects and local Balinese artisans to conceal wiring within natural stone channels and bamboo conduits—preserving visual continuity. Fixture placement was validated using photometric simulation software (AGi32), modeling light spill, vertical illuminance on façades, and horizontal uniformity across 20+ distinct zones. Final commissioning included spectral tuning to suppress blue-rich wavelengths (<5% at 450nm) to protect nocturnal wildlife—a requirement verified by an independent ecologist.
Project Results
The completed hospitality lighting system reduced total outdoor energy consumption by 78% versus conventional alternatives, achieving an average power density of just 0.18 W/m²—well below ASHRAE 90.1-2022 benchmarks. Guest satisfaction scores for nighttime experience rose from 72% to 96% in post-occupancy surveys, with particular praise for ‘safe yet serene’ pathways and ‘magical’ water reflections after dusk. Ecological monitoring confirmed zero measurable light intrusion beyond property boundaries and no observed disruption to local bat or gecko activity. Maintenance intervals extended from quarterly to biennial, thanks to the robust thermal management and corrosion-resistant housing—cutting long-term OPEX by 41%.
Client Feedback
‘This isn’t just lighting—it’s atmospheric architecture,’ said Ida Bagus, Director of Operations at Surya Loka. ‘The precision of the landscape lighting design elevated our guest journey from arrival to bedtime, all while staying true to our zero-compromise sustainability ethos. Their technical rigor and cultural sensitivity made them indispensable partners.’
